On-site innovation

REMUSOV pilots innovative organic techniques so we can share best practices with our farmers. This includes mandala gardens, vertical gardens, greenhouses, drip irrigation, liquid compost, companion planting, and much more!

In 2006, two young farmers from Vaudreuil were invited to participate in a workshop on organic farming in the Dominican Republic. When they learned about the importance of organic agriculture for the health of their farms, their communities, and their environment, they decided to bring this knowledge back home. A cooperative was formed and became part of what would become REMUSOV, and for the past decade, they have been working on expanding and strengthening organic agriculture across the community.

Organic farming in Vodrey

Nurseries

REMUSOV operates a plant nursery to help develop quality seeds into seedlings for our farmers. We grow a large range of vegetable and spice seedlings as well as bamboo cuttings and tree saplings. This nursery allows us to test new varieties and bring high-quality plants to our farmers.

Vermiculture

For several years now, REMUSOV has been using worms to help make rich compost that we share with our farmers and sell to others. This is called vermiculture, and it is a wonderful way to make high-quality compost to enrich our fields.

Environmental conservation

Part of organic farming is taking care of your environment. Vaudreuil lies on the Grey River, which experiences a lot of bank erosion during heavy rains. REMUSOV has been cultivating bamboo to plant along the riverbank to prevent soil erosion and flooding.

Administrative support

REMUSOV has an office, computer, and printer to help us run the affairs of the cooperative in a modern way (except when there are major power cuts!). We are able to document our progress, share information, and stay organized - which is essential for any contemporary farmer.

Aquaculture

We have been farming tilapia on our grounds for the past several years. The tilapia are fed natural ingredients that we grow on-site, and no chemicals are used. We use the water from the tilapia pond to water our nursery (it is essentially a form of organic liquid fertilizer!), and we produce beautiful fish to sell.
